Overview:
A senior manager at a multinational corporation approached Lawal Chambers after being abruptly dismissed without notice or severance pay following 9 years of dedicated service. The termination was carried out in clear violation of Nigerian labour law and the client’s employment contract.
The Challenge:
The employer — a large multinational with significant legal resources — denied any wrongdoing and refused all attempts at dialogue. Our client was left without income, facing financial hardship and deeply affected by the sudden and unjust termination.
Our Approach:
Our employment law team reviewed the employment contract thoroughly and identified multiple breaches by the employer including failure to give statutory notice, non-payment of accrued benefits and violation of the company’s own disciplinary procedure. We filed a claim at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria and pursued the matter aggressively.
The Outcome:
The National Industrial Court ruled in our client’s favour and awarded ₦12,000,000 in compensation covering unpaid notice, severance pay, accrued leave and damages for wrongful termination. The judgment was delivered within 8 months of filing the claim.
